About FIDE America

Confederation of Chess for the Americas

FIDE America, also known as the Confederation of Chess for the Americas (CCA), is the official continental chess organization representing national federations throughout North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean.

As one of the continental bodies recognized by FIDE, FIDE America helps coordinate competitions, development programs, educational initiatives, and governance matters affecting chess across the region.

Our Role

The organization serves as a link between national federations and the international chess community.

Its responsibilities include:

  • Organizing continental championships
  • Coordinating qualification pathways to FIDE events
  • Supporting chess development programs
  • Training arbiters and coaches
  • Promoting chess in schools
  • Assisting member federations
  • Representing the Americas within FIDE

Through these activities, FIDE America helps maintain common standards and opportunities for players throughout the continent.

History

Continental chess competition in the Americas has a long tradition. The Pan American Championship dates back to 1945 and remains one of the region’s most important events.

Over the decades, the growth of chess across Latin America, North America, and the Caribbean created the need for a stronger continental structure capable of coordinating tournaments, development programs, and international representation.

Today, FIDE America works with more than 35 member federations and manages a broad calendar of championships and educational initiatives.

Geographic Structure

FIDE America coordinates activities across five official FIDE zones covering the entire Western Hemisphere.

These zones include federations from:

  • North America
  • Central America
  • The Caribbean
  • Northern South America
  • Southern South America

This structure allows federations to compete regionally while remaining connected to continental and global chess events.

Championships and Events

Every year, FIDE America supports a wide range of tournaments for players of different ages and categories.

These include continental championships for open, women’s, junior, youth, senior, rapid, blitz, and team competitions.

Many of these events provide direct qualification opportunities for FIDE world championships and other major international tournaments.

Development Programs

FIDE America views chess development as a long-term process that extends beyond tournament organization.

The organization supports educational initiatives, school chess projects, coach training, arbiter certification, and social programs that use chess as a tool for learning and community engagement.

Recent projects have included activities related to Chess in Education, Chess for Freedom, trainer development, and international cooperation with other continental federations.

Working With Member Federations

Member federations remain at the center of FIDE America’s work.

The organization provides support in areas such as tournament organization, regulations, title applications, educational programs, and international representation.

By working together, federations across the Americas can share experience, strengthen local chess communities, and create more opportunities for players throughout the region.

Looking Forward

FIDE America continues to expand opportunities for players, coaches, arbiters, organizers, and federations throughout the continent.

Through competition, education, and international cooperation, the organization aims to support sustainable chess development across the Americas while maintaining strong connections with the global chess community.
